How Snoring Can Affect Your Relationships

Author: John Lenaghan

If your partner has a snoring problem, the odds are pretty good that you've found yourself complaining about it to someone, at some point. You may have said how tired you feel all the time because the constant noise at night is keeping you from getting a good night's sleep.

If your husband snores, there's a good chance that it's disturbing your sleep to some degree or another. For guys whose wives snore, it may not be as much of a problem. The simple fact is, men usually snore louder.

Snoring can be such a problem in some relationships that it has been grounds for divorce. Both partners can suffer from lack of sleep when one or the other snores and this can lead to being overtired, irritable and generally stressed. These kinds of feelings can ultimately lead to disagreements and unhappiness in a relationship.

In snoring studies that focused on its effects on relationships, more than 50% of the couples agreed that the snoring was causing serious arguments. 80% of them admitted to sleeping in another room occasionally (some often) just to get a better night's sleep.

10% of the couples studied said the snoring was bad enough to make then consider leaving their partner.

Part of the problem is that the snorer often thinks there's nothing they can do to stop the snoring, so they don't take their partner's complaints seriously. This can obviously lead to further problems, creating a self-fulfilling problem.

In some cases the problem can get to a point where couples wonder if the relationship is really even worth rescuing. They're spending less time together, they're sleeping apart and they're irritable and tired most of the time.

Fortunately there are things that can be done to treat a snoring problem. The first step is to consult with a health care professional. They will be able to help you determine what the underlying cause of your snoring is, and what treatment is the best.

Treatments can range from simple lifestyle changes to more serious things like surgery. Whatever treatment your doctor recommends, it will help you sleep better, your partner sleep better and might just save your relationship.
